Furniture restoration & Repairs in Auckland – Kimata repairs Ltd

The brief was to restore a Captain’s Chair top to bottom — saved from the tip owing more to nostalgia over its familial provenance than hard-nosed prudence — requiring a rare blend of honesty and pragmatism over the scope of restoration, coupled with regular communication every step of the way, befitting the nuanced nature of the agreed quote.

On every single metric, Kimata Repairs exceeded expectations. Tom’s time management, workmanship and overall demeanour — be-it on site or in the workshop — was impeccable: a case study in how to win repeat business, in an age where skills and attendant professionalism are, sadly, in short supply.

I have no hesitation in recommending Tom Kimata and his eponymous business, which may have been akin to finding a needle in the proverbial (Google search) haystack but was, and is, a case of serendipity that warrants sharing, for anyone who hankers after having their own Repair Shop-esque experience right here in Auckland, NZ.

Arigatou, Tom! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In a world where just about everything is mass produced, it is a real treat to come across someone like Tom - a skilled craftsman from Japan. He did a really sensational job for us by restoring some classy old furniture that had fallen in to disrepair. He has a great eye and a beautiful aesthetic

Tom Kimata’s work is so beautiful that we are now taking all of our furniture to him, piece by piece for him to restore and beautify – what a discovery he has been! Tom listens carefully, is attentive to what we like and sensitively brings this together with his knowledge and understanding of furniture construction, finish and the restoration process to create the best finished piece. Tom has been helpful at every step of the process. He has now restored an early 1800s chair for us, two dozen ex-St Matthews Rimu pews, and will shortly begin restoring our fabulous 1920s wood and leather lounge suite.

And Tom is always so cheerful! He makes everything easy. Our heartfelt thanks again to you Tom.

Tom has just finished a stunning restoration on our Victorian Oak, Joseph Fitter extendable dining table. The table top had warped and needed a highly skilled woodworker to repair the panels so they could fit together again. Tom has brought this family heirloom back to life! He also restored our mid-century dining chairs that had taken a real battering over the years. He replaced the old cane, repaired the broken joins, sanded and polished, then reupholstered the seats. I wanted the colour of the table and chairs to go together. The chairs are mahogany which is naturally red, but I didn't want the table to be too dark. Tom took a lot of care finding the right stain and polish for the table so that colour worked nicely with the chairs. He kept me involved throughout the process, checking each stage to make sure I was happy with the colour and finish. Wow! The results speak for themselves. I'm now going to commission Tom to restore my solid wood kitchen. Tom is a great guy and very skilled in his profession, and I would highly recommend him.
